Retail Packaging Statement 2026
SOGA Organic is the only certified organic citrus processor in South Africa. We only process fruit from the four SOGA Growers, ensuring complete traceability, exceptional quality and the integrity of every product we produce. All four growers farm in South Africa along the fertile Sundays River Valley, near the Addo Elephant National Park.
One of our core values that made us farm organically is our drive to produce fruit on a sustainable basis. We are developing a robust farming system where the quality of our soils improves every year. We are acutely aware of the need to farm in harmony with nature, and to always put back into our environment more than what we take out.
Quality and food safety are very important at SOGA Organic to ensure the best quality and integrity of all our products. We grow, produce and package all our retail products ourselves and all packaging materials are only sourced from approved suppliers.
Citrus Processing Plant Accreditations:
- Certified Organic by Control Union – EU and NOP
- BRCGS (Brand Reputable Compliance Global Standards)
- PPECB (Perishable Products Export Control Board)
In the development of our retail product range, we were acutely aware of the impact on the environment. However, finding any alternative to plastic is a challenge. Being frozen citrus juice products, we had no option but to make some compromises. Both metal and glass bottles proved problematic when it came to freezing, and freezing our product is critical in our process as it obviates the need to add any preservatives. HDPE, LDPE and PP are all opaque, and we needed a clear bottle. We were left with only one option: polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
Biological, biochemical and chemical reactivity are dramatically influenced by temperature, and whereas there might be low amounts of leaching at high temperatures, this would be negligible at
−18°C, the temperature at which our products are stored and distributed.
Many beverages, food items and other consumer products are delivered in bottles or packages made from PET. The #1 code is usually found on or near the bottom of the container.
Manufacturers like it because it is safe, strong, transparent and versatile. Customers choose it for its safety, light weight, re-sealability, shatter-resistance and recyclability. Up to 100% of a PET package can be made from recycled PET, and the material can be recycled again and again. It is used to make new bottles, but recycled PET can also be made into fibre for carpets; fabric for T-shirts or fleece jackets; fiberfill for sleeping bags, winter coats, and dog beds; industrial strapping; sheet and thermoformed (clam shell) packaging; and automotive parts such as headliners, bumpers, and door panels.
We encourage all customers who purchase our 250ml Certified Organic Frozen Citrus Juices (Orange, Ruby Grapefruit, Naartjie, Lemon and Lime) and 1L Frozen Orange Juice in PET bottles with HDPE/LDPE caps to reuse and recycle the packaging wherever possible.
Our 500ml Frozen Orange Juice is packaged in a Bio-PET bottle with a print-on-bottle label. Unlike conventional PET, which uses monoethylene glycol derived from fossil fuels, Bio-PET uses monoethylene glycol derived from renewable plant-based sources, typically sugarcane. Bio-PET has the same performance and shelf-life as conventional PET, including a 24-month Best Before date, and can be recycled through the same PET recycling stream. The food-grade HDPE cap is also fully recyclable.
Our Certified Organic Frozen Lemon Juice is available in convenient 10ml form-fill-and-seal sachets, packed in a re-sealable pouch containing 24 x 10ml units, or in a 250ml PET bottle with a polypropylene flip-top cap for everyday use. The convenient 10ml Frozen Lemon Cube® – perfect for adding fresh lemon juice to salads, sauces, or a cup of hot water or tea – remains a South African first. Following years of research and testing to identify innovative, environmentally responsible packaging solutions for this unique product, it became clear that recyclable trays were simply not suitable for packaging liquids. As a result, plastic remained the only viable option. This innovative product has received multiple awards, including recognition for Best Packaging and Best Cooking & Baking Ingredient. Since its launch, we have reduced the amount of plastic used in each sachet by 50%, and the outer re-sealable pouch is now 100% recyclable, reflecting our ongoing commitment to improving the sustainability of our packaging.
Finding suitable packaging for our 100ml Certified Organic Frozen Orange Rocket® was a challenge. After an extensive search for a local supplier of cardboard squeeze tubes, we sourced our packaging from Europe. The food-grade squeeze tubes are made from Cupforma Classic board with a polyethylene coating for product safety and are 100% recyclable. Our locally manufactured 10 x 100ml Orange Rocket® multipack box is made from Polyboard®, an environmentally friendly material produced from recycled industrial and commercial waste that can be reused and recycled.
All outer cartons used for the bulk packaging of our retail products are manufactured from recycled fluting and liner paper. All SOGA Organic retail products contain just one ingredient: Certified Organic Citrus Juice – Just Squeezed & Freezed®
- No pesticide residues (Glyphosate FREE)
- No preservatives
- No additives
- No colouring or flavouring
- No added sugar
- No added water
- Not From Concentrate (NFC)
The development of 100% recyclable or biodegradable food-safe packaging that can withstand prolonged frozen storage remains a challenge. However, we continuously evaluate new and improved packaging solutions to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible. SOGA Organic remains committed to balancing product quality, food safety and environmental responsibility as packaging technologies continue to evolve.
